Trail of Tears 7"X 5 1/8" Print
This is a story as told by an old Creek man just before his
death.....His grandmother and her parents were sent on the Trail. During the
journey, one of their two horses went lame and was unable to go on. Just at that
same time a horrible blizzard came up. The parents reluctantly sent their young
daughter ahead with the rest of the tribe on the good horse, telling her they
would meet her at Fort Gibson Indian Territory. She made the long journey but
when she got to the fort there was no word of her parents and she never saw them
again.

Eagle Dancer 6" X 9 1/8" Print
The most sacred of the Animal Dances was the Eagle Dance and
it could be executed for several reasons. The Eagle Dance could be done as a
victory dance in celebration of triumph over enemy or foes in competitions. Or
if a tribal member dreamed of Eagles, an Eagle Dance would be called, it was
believed that if the dance was not performed a member of the dreamers family
could die.

Ball Player 6"X 9 1/8"
The "Ballplayer" to the
Cherokee people was of the most importance. Sometimes it was a substitute
for war to resolve disputes the ballplayers went through scratching, purging and
fasting. This game was played with 4 to 7 people but at times could reach
as high as 100. The wives of the players also participated if a player was
lagging or not putting forth his best effort the wife would whip and beat him
with the stick to motivate him to get in the game. People were maimed and
even killed along with side bets of horses and women. This ballplayer with his
ballsticks in his hands and the markings placed on his chest and face by the
medicine man made from the charcoal embers of a lightning struck cedar tree
giving them the player the power of the lightning. To mark his struggle he
wears eagle feathers which if he was a inferior player that day it would have
brought on ridicule from his fellow tribe members.
